"Vasamalli - The Red Warrior"

In this monochromatic red digital painting, I have explored the interplay of tints, tones, and shades to reflect the quiet fading of the Toda tribe's culture. This artwork is inspired by Mrs. Vasamalli K.,a 65 Year-old Toda embroidery artisan from Ooty. When I met her, she told me that her journey began at the age of 12, and her dedication to preserving her craft and culture has never wavered.

As the first woman in her village to attain higher education, and her story is one of resilience and quiet revolution.

Her life’s work has taken her across four continents, where she has shared the pride of the Toda people, advocating for peace and non-violence. She is a warrior, not with weapons, but with the thread and needle of her people’s craft, striving to keep the tradition alive in a world that often overlooks such quiet acts of preservation.

This painting depicts a woman representing Mrs. Vasamalli, engaged in her embroidery, known as "Pukhoor." Toda embroidery, primarily done by the women of the tribe, uses three major colors that symbolize different stages of life: RED for maturity- (representing in my painting),White for infancy, and Black for old age. The motifs in the embroidery are inspired by the hills slopes, buffalo horns, and honeycombs of the Toda homeland.

The woman in the painting reclines against a sacred buffalo, an animal that holds immense cultural significance for the Toda people. Buffalos are not just livestock but are revered, symbolizing the tribe's deep connection with nature. The landscape in which she works mirrors the vast, serene surroundings of the Nilgiri Mountains, where her art and spirit thrive.

Through this painting, I seek to capture the essence of Mrs. Vasamalli's life—a life dedicated to the preservation of her culture, art, and the environment that nurtures them. It is a reflection of how I have seen her: a warrior, steadfast and strong, stitching together the past and the future with every needlepoint.
